ROOTED is a powerful 6-week educational program designed to empower vulnerable young people, particularly those in schools, care homes, and prisons by reconnecting them with the rich heritage of African and Caribbean hair and identity. Through interactive workshops, storytelling, and practical hair care sessions, ROOTED explores the deep cultural significance of Afro hair, dismantles harmful beauty standards, and fosters pride in heritage and self-expression.
Our mission is to create safe, inclusive spaces where young people can reclaim their identity, celebrate their roots, and build confidence through knowledge and community. ROOTED is not just about hair, it’s about history, healing, and honouring who we are.
Week 1 - The Power Of Our Roots - The History Of Afro Hair
Our Objective is to understand the origins and cultural significance of Afro Hair thorough history and recognise how external forces shaped the perceptions of black hair
Week 2 - Hair and Identity - Embracing Who We Are
Objective is to help participants connect their hair to their personal and cultural identity and help build self esteem through positive hair representation.
Week 3 - Hair types & Textures - Understanding Your Crown
Our objective teach participants how to identify their hair type and porosity and learn about different care needs based on different textures.
Week 4 - Hair Protection & Maintenance
Our objective is to teach protective styling techniques and daily care routines while empowering youths to take ownership of their hair health
Week 5 -Styling & Creativity
Our objective is to encourage creativity and personal expression through hairstyling as well as learning safe styling practices.
Week 6 - Celebration & Legacy
Our objectives is reflect on personal growth and learning over the 6weeks and celebrate the identity and hair journey. Introduce the idea of advocacy and education.
ROOTED is a 6-week heritage education and wellbeing program ideal for schools, care homes, and youth justice settings. It is designed to support students from African and Caribbean backgrounds particularly those who may be in care or at risk; through engaging, age-appropriate sessions that explore hair care, cultural history, and personal identity.
Each session combines practical knowledge with discussion and creativity, helping young people build confidence, a sense of belonging, and a deeper connection to their roots. ROOTED also aligns with PSHE and inclusion goals, making it a meaningful addition to your wellbeing or enrichment curriculum.
